Single Session Therapy: Can One Therapy Session Really Help?

When people think about therapy, they often imagine committing to weekly sessions for several months or even years. But not everyone who seeks therapeutic support needs or wants long-term therapy.

Sometimes there is one particular situation that feels difficult to manage. You may be facing an important decision, struggling with a relationship, feeling emotionally overwhelmed, or simply feeling stuck and unsure what to do next.

In these situations, Single Session Therapy (SST) can offer an opportunity to pause, reflect and focus on what matters most to you right now.

Single Session Therapy does not suggest that every difficulty can be resolved in one appointment. Instead, it recognises that one meaningful therapy session can be valuable in its own right, even if it does not lead to ongoing therapy.

What Is Single Session Therapy?

Single Session Therapy is an approach in which each therapeutic meeting is treated as a potentially complete and meaningful session.

Rather than assuming from the beginning that therapy must continue for a particular number of weeks or months, the session focuses on what you most want help with today.

You don't necessarily need to tell your entire life story or explore every difficult experience from your past.

Instead, we can focus on one particular concern that is affecting you now.

This might be a difficult decision, a relationship issue, an emotional reaction you don't fully understand, or simply the feeling that you have become stuck.

Can One Therapy Session Really Help?

One therapy session is unlikely to change everything. But therapy does not have to solve every problem to be useful.

Sometimes having the opportunity to talk openly about what is happening can help you make sense of thoughts and emotions that have felt confusing or overwhelming.

A single session may help you:

*understand your situation more clearly *explore difficult thoughts and emotions *recognise patterns you hadn't previously noticed *consider a different perspective *identify your needs *explore possible choices or next steps *feel less overwhelmed by what you are experiencing

For some people, the most important outcome may simply be:

“I understand myself and what is happening a little better now.”

That can be a meaningful starting point for change.

Do I Have to Talk About My Whole Past?

No.

Some people delay seeking therapy because they worry that they will immediately have to discuss their childhood, trauma or other painful experiences.

With Single Session Therapy, we can begin with what is happening in your life now.

Your past may naturally become part of the conversation if it is relevant to your current situation, but there is no expectation that you disclose experiences you are not ready to discuss.

As an integrative therapist, I believe therapy should respect your pace and your autonomy. You decide what you want to bring to the session and what feels important to explore.

What Can Single Session Therapy Help With?

A one-off therapy session may be helpful when there is a particular issue you would like to explore rather than beginning open-ended therapy.

For example, you may be experiencing a difficult decision, relationship problem, life transition, workplace issue, emotional overwhelm, anxiety about a particular situation, an internal conflict, or a sense of being stuck.

Sometimes we already know something needs to change but cannot quite see what the next step should be.

Having a confidential therapeutic space can provide an opportunity to slow things down and look at the situation from a different perspective.

Is Single Session Therapy Suitable for Everyone?

Not necessarily.

Some difficulties are complex, longstanding or connected to experiences that may benefit from the consistency and safety of an ongoing therapeutic relationship.

There may also be situations where a different type or level of professional support would be more appropriate.

A single session does not have to provide a final answer. It can also help you think about what kind of support you need next.

What Happens After a Single Therapy Session?

The choice remains yours.

You may leave the session feeling that you have gained what you needed for now.

You might decide that you would like another session.

Or you may realise that something important has emerged that you would like to explore through regular therapy.

You might also decide that my approach is not right for you or that another type of support would better meet your needs.

Single Session Therapy does not require you to commit to ongoing sessions before you know whether they would be helpful.

One Session Can Still Be Meaningful

I don't believe the value of therapy should always be measured by the number of sessions someone attends.

For many people, meaningful therapeutic work takes time. Trust, safety and the therapeutic relationship can develop gradually, and ongoing therapy may provide the consistency needed to explore deeper or longstanding difficulties.

But there are also times when one focused and thoughtful conversation can make a difference.

It may help you put something into words, understand an emotional response, recognise what you need, consider another perspective or identify a possible way forward.

One therapy session doesn't have to solve everything to be worthwhile.

Sometimes one meaningful conversation may be exactly what you need at that particular point in your life.
